Overview of different battery technologies

Choosing the right battery depends on the specific requirements of the vehicle and the operating conditions. Whether for a car, lorry, motorbike, caravan or boat - we have the right battery for starting an engine in stock.

The dimensions of a new vehicle battery should match the old one. The technology also plays a decisive role. Our experts will provide you with comprehensive advice to help you find the optimum solution for your fleet's or your customers' vehicles.

Starter batteries for motorbikes or scooters must be compact, powerful and vibration-resistant. Maintenance-free AGM batteries or gel batteries are particularly suitable as they are robust and ideal for seasonal use. Sufficient starting power is important.

A supply battery is recommended for the operation of electrical consumers, for example in caravans. You can find more information here: Supply batteries for motorhomes

Starter batteries

With our range of AGM, EFB and wet batteries, we cover all requirements - from modern start-stop systems to classic applications.

AGM

  • Highest performance and durability
  • Leak-proof and cycle-proof
  • For cars with start-stop systems, brake energy recovery, powerful engines and many electrical consumers
  • Commercial vehicles with extensive equipment or in seasonal use, e.g. tractors and construction machinery
  • Ideal for vehicles that are frequently used in extreme conditions
  • Suitable for motorbikes

EFB

  • Improved lead-acid battery performance
  • Cost-effective alternative to AGM batteries
  • Specially developed for vehicles with start-stop technology
  • Ideal for use in cars and light commercial vehicles such as vans

Lead-acid batteries (wet batteries)

  • Proven and cost-effective solution for vehicles with lower battery requirements
  • Ideal for standard cars and classic cars
  • Use in commercial vehicles such as lorries, construction site vehicles, delivery vehicles or agricultural machinery with simple equipment
  • High starting power

Frequently asked questions

You have questions about Starter batteries for cars, motorbikes and lorries?

Here you will find an overview of the most frequently asked questions and answers.

Are starter batteries maintenance-free?

Modern AGM and EFB batteries are maintenance-free. However, the acid level in classic lead-acid batteries should be checked regularly and topped up with distilled water if necessary. Current lead-acid batteries in the starter range are manufactured with a labyrinth cover and are therefore maintenance-free.

Can I use a different battery technology than the one previously installed in a vehicle?

Yes, in many cases this is possible, but you should make sure that the new battery technology is compatible with the requirements of the vehicle. It is important that you check the compatibility of your charger and alternator. AGM batteries may only be replaced with identical technology, as they have a different than lead-acid batteries. Our experts will be happy to advise you on which options make sense for your vehicle.

How do I choose the right starter battery?

The choice of the right battery depends on the requirements and electrical consumers of the vehicle. Vehicles with start-stop systems, for example, require AGM or EFB batteries, while standard cars can usually be equipped with classic lead-acid batteries. Our experts will be happy to advise you on your choice.
If necessary, measure the length, width and height and pay attention to the type and arrangement of the connection poles. Positive terminal on the right or positive terminal on the left. It should be ensured that the new starter battery fits into the vehicle.
The capacity of the previously installed (old) battery is generally used as a guide. However, the capacity values may deviate slightly (+/- 10%).

What do EN, CCA, cold test current and starting current mean?

The cold test current (also known as cold cranking current) indicates the current that a starter battery can deliver at low temperatures. It is measured at -18°C according to EN (European standard) or -17.8°C according to CCA (Cold Cranking Amps, North American standard).
This tests the current that the battery can supply for 30 seconds before the voltage falls below a specified final discharge voltage (e.g. 7.5V for a 12V battery in accordance with EN).
The cold start current is a decisive factor for the starting ability of a vehicle at low temperatures. The higher the value, the more powerful the battery is when starting the engine.

What do AGM and EFB mean?

AGM stands for "" and refers to batteries with glass fibre fleece that binds the acid. These batteries offer maximum performance, are leak-proof and have a particularly long service life.
EFB stands for "" and is a further development of the classic lead-acid batteries, especially for vehicles with start-stop technology.

What do the indications C10 or C20 on the battery type plates mean?

The values C10 and C20 indicate the capacity of the battery in ampere hours (Ah) and refer to the discharge time.

For example, a specification of 225 Ah (C10) and 242 Ah (C20) means that the battery can release more energy over a period of 20 hours than over 10 hours. The faster a battery is discharged, the lower its actual available capacity.
