Is it possible to install different battery capacities in the safety systems?

100%his question can only be answered correctly in conjunction with the VdS-approved control panel. The operating licence for the system specifies the maximum permissible battery capacities.

Is it possible to replace individual defective batteries from a safety system (consisting of several batteries) with new ones?

Replacing individual blocks is not recommended due to the service life of the old batteries. The different service lives result in different capacities and internal resistances in a system. The consequences are potential shifts. One battery is discharged slightly more than the other due to the internal resistance, while one battery is already full when charging and may be overcharged, while another battery has not yet been fully charged.
Conclusion: The older battery "drags down" the new battery. The service life of the overall system is not extended.
Replacing individual batteries is therefore not recommended!

Can car batteries also be used in motorhomes or boats?

are suitable if the battery is only to be used to start the engine. We do not recommend the use of car batteries, i.e. starter batteries, to supply the electrical consumers of boats or motorhomes. Starter batteries are designed to supply high currents for starting the engine in a short time, while are designed for cyclical loads. They can deliver consistent amounts of current over a longer period of time without being damaged. Starter batteries would wear out prematurely when used in this way.

Can balcony solar systems be retrofitted with a storage system?

Certain balcony power plants can be combined with a storage unit (depending on the inverter). This makes it possible to store the solar power generated during the day and use it at a later time, for example in the evening or at night. Why do DC-AGM and gel batteries generally make more sense than lithium batteries in wheelchairs / scooters?

Lithium-ion batteries have both advantages and disadvantages, which should be carefully considered, especially in the rehabilitation sector. For example, lithium batteries are very light. Heavy lead batteries are usually required as a counterweight in the wheelchair to maintain tipping stability. The BMS (battery management system) of the lithium batteries could abruptly block the wheelchair from continuing its journey at high discharge depths, e.g. at danger points such as traffic lights. Choosing the right charger is also important. If you are interested in lithium batteries, it is therefore essential that you speak to our rehab advice team.

What do AGM and EFB mean?

AGM stands for "" and refers to batteries with glass fibre fleece that binds the acid. These batteries offer maximum performance, are leak-proof and have a particularly long service life.
EFB stands for "" and is a further development of the classic lead-acid batteries, especially for vehicles with start-stop technology.

What do the indications C10 or C20 on the battery type plates mean?

The values C10 and C20 indicate the capacity of the battery in ampere hours (Ah) and refer to the discharge time.

For example, a specification of 225 Ah (C10) and 242 Ah (C20) means that the battery can release more energy over a period of 20 hours than over 10 hours. The faster a battery is discharged, the lower its actual available capacity.

What do EN, CCA, cold test current and starting current mean?

The cold test current (also known as cold cranking current) indicates the current that a starter battery can deliver at low temperatures. It is measured at -18°C according to EN (European standard) or -17.8°C according to CCA (Cold Cranking Amps, North American standard).
This tests the current that the battery can supply for 30 seconds before the voltage falls below a specified final discharge voltage (e.g. 7.5V for a 12V battery in accordance with EN).
The cold start current is a decisive factor for the starting ability of a vehicle at low temperatures. The higher the value, the more powerful the battery is when starting the engine.

What do SEER and SCOP mean?

The SEER value (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) indicates the seasonal energy efficiency of a in cooling mode and shows how efficiently the system works over an entire cooling season. A higher SEER value means better energy utilisation.
The SCOP value (Seasonal Coefficient of Performance) describes the seasonal efficiency in heating mode. It indicates how much heat output an air conditioning system delivers per kilowatt hour of electricity used over the entire heating period. Here too, the higher the SCOP value, the more efficient the appliance.

What does zero feed-in mean for balcony power plants?

Zero feed-in prevents electricity from being fed into the public grid. Instead, the electricity is used exclusively in the household. This is made possible by special micro-inverters or control units. The electricity can also be used later with a storage unit. In this way, the electricity generated remains in the home and effectively reduces your own energy costs.

What needs to be considered when converting the golf cart to lithium?

Converting golf carts to lithium batteries is easy. However, you need special chargers to ensure a constant charging current and a constant end-of-charge voltage. In contrast to lead batteries, it is important that the charger switches off automatically after the charging process. The specific requirements of the new batteries must also be taken into account, such as the maximum charging voltage and the optimum storage temperature. Our experts will be happy to advise you.

What is the difference between a split and a multi-split air conditioning unit?

A split air conditioning unit consists of an indoor and an outdoor unit and is suitable for air conditioning a single room. A multi-split system can connect several indoor units to a single outdoor unit and is suitable for several rooms.

What is the difference between starter and supply batteries?

There are two main types of battery on boats and in motorhomes. Starter batteries are specially designed to start the boat engine. They supply high currents for a short time and are then recharged directly by the engine.

Supply batteries, on the other hand, provide power for electrical devices such as navigation systems, lighting, refrigerators or entertainment electronics on board. These batteries are designed to deliver consistent amounts of energy over a long period of time.

It is important to separate the two battery types so that the supply batteries do not discharge the starter batteries and thus prevent the engine from restarting.

What is a UPS system?

An uninterruptible power supply system (UPS for short) is used to supply emergency power to connected loads in the event of a power failure.

What needs to be considered when installing an EV charger?

The installation of a must be carried out by a qualified electrician. It is important to check the electrical requirements and ensure that the domestic installation fulfils the necessary requirements. A wallbox must be registered with the electricity grid operator. Our experts will be happy to advise you and assist you with the installation.

What needs to be considered when choosing a charger for boat or motorhome batteries?

While travelling, the on-board batteries are charged by the engine's alternator. However, an optimum full charge is usually only achieved using a charger with a 220 V connection. For this reason, every opportunity for charging should be utilised. Wind generators and solar panels are usually only used for supplementary charging, i.e. a charger is required to optimally charge the batteries and thus maximise their service life. We will be happy to help you select a suitable charger.

Be careful with the different batteries! There are different charging techniques for acid, gel, AGM and lithium batteries. An incorrect charger can damage the battery and, in the worst case, can lead to an explosion. Always seek advice!

What do I need to bear in mind when maintaining wet batteries?

Wet batteries must be topped up regularly. Use demineralised water for this and check the water level. As a safe and time-saving solution for filling your batteries, we recommend a water drop container, which you can also find in our online shop.

They also offer higher cycle stability, which means they can go through more charge and discharge cycles without loss of performance. They are also much lighter and maintenance-free, which reduces operating costs and makes them easier to handle.

What are the advantages of a UPS system?

There are several advantages for the user or operator when using UPS systems to protect the connected loads.

The first and most important advantage is the protection of the power supply for server landscapes, sensitive measurement electronics and all types of IT as well as cash register systems, for example. In the event of a power failure, not only is the loss of data, measurement results or the failure of complex systems prevented, it is even possible to continue working in the event of a power failure without interrupting the supply from the UPS system. A second advantage can also be, for example, to restore the "electrical imbalance" of the house connection and the main building distribution to a symmetrical utilisation of the three phase conductors (L1, L2, L3) by the UPS system.

What is a cycle type as opposed to a standard type?

Cycle types are very important for many rehab applications. These batteries are designed for constant charging and discharging. This is the case with a scooter or electric wheelchair, for example. The battery is discharged during the day and usually only reconnected to the charger at night. The term cycle stability indicates how resistant a battery is to this cyclical load. A cycle type can therefore withstand considerably more charging and discharging processes than a standard type. The main design difference between a cycle type and a standard type is the lead plate thickness of the battery. Thicker lead plates are installed in the cycle type. For this reason, cycle types are generally heavier and therefore more expensive than standard types.

Which batteries can I install for which wheelchair?

Battery manufacturers don't make it easy for our customers. Our rehab advice experts already know which battery is suitable for many wheelchair models and can provide you with expert advice. Together we will find the right product for you. Capacity (Ah), dimensions and area of application are the decisive parameters for selecting the right battery.

What types of UPS systems are there and which type do I need?

UPS systems are essentially divided into three categories:

  • Offline / standby UPS systems of classification 3 according to IEC 62040-3: Provide protection against power failure, voltage dips and overvoltage. This type of UPS system offers the least protection, but at the same time is usually the most cost-effective variant. It is referred to as an offline or standby system, as the system only takes over the supply to the connected loads in the event of a power failure. The switching time often results in voltage dips of up to 10 ms. IT consumers, such as computers, can often compensate for this delay so that no power failure is noticeable at the consumer. These types of systems are therefore almost exclusively intended for computers or small IT devices that are not mission-critical consumers.
  • Line-interactive UPS systems of classification 2 according to IEC 62040-3: Provide additional protection against short circuits in the public grid and line noise. The line-interactive system is regarded as an intermediate stage between offline and online technology. In contrast to offline UPS systems, systems of this classification also smooth the output voltage so that they also protect the connected loads against voltage peaks and line noise. These types of system are also suitable for protecting computers and, in some cases, server systems that are not mission-critical consumers.
  • Online UPS systems of classification 1 according to IEC 62040-3: Provide additional protection against high voltage peaks, frequency deviations, switching peaks and harmonics. UPS systems of the online classification provide optimum protection for your consumers and can be used for business-critical applications. Thanks to the double conversion technology, there is no voltage interruption in the event of a mains failure and the loads are permanently supplied. In addition, systems in this category also protect against various types of voltage disturbances. As the rectifier and inverter of the UPS system are permanently in operation, a pure sine wave is generated so that an optimum voltage supply is permanently provided for your consumers.

Which battery technology is best suited for boats or motorhomes?

The supply batteries with AGM technology impress with their versatility and are the ideal choice in combination with an inverter.

Gel batteries are one of the most popular solutions for supplying power to electrical consumers in the caravan/marine sector. They are characterised by their easy transportability and can easily withstand longer storage periods.

Lithium iron phosphate batteries are becoming increasingly popular, particularly due to their low weight in combination with a high . Although the purchase costs are higher, these are offset in the long term by their impressive longevity and outstanding cycle stability.

How can I optimise the service life of my batteries?

Particularly good Care and correct Loading of the battery are crucial for its service life. Our guides will help you to maximise the service life of your batteries.

How can I advise my customers on the required capacity of a supply battery?

The capacity of a supply battery should be carefully matched to the energy requirements on board. Batteries last longest when they are regularly fully charged and only discharged a little. Common errors in dimensioning are

  • Too large: The charger, solar panel or wind generator does not supply enough power to fully charge the battery. This reduces the capacity over time.
  • Too small: Consumers draw more current from the battery than it can supply, resulting in a and permanent damage.

A rough calculation of the required capacity (Ah) is made as follows:
Power (W) ÷ voltage (V) = amperage (A)
Amperage × duration of use per day = required capacity (Ah)
Example: 60 W ÷ 12 V = 5 A
5 A × 10 hours = 50 Ah

This calculation can be used to determine the consumption of each individual device and the required total capacity can be determined by adding the results. As the actual usable capacity differs from the specified capacity, the calculated value must be adjusted with an appropriate factor depending on the battery type.

  • Liquid batteries: Factor 1.7 à 85 Ah
  • AGM/gel batteries: Factor 1.4 à 70 Ah

How can I expect the service after the purchase?

Our After Sales team is focused in supporting you quickly and efficiently. Feel free to ask about sales material, training opportunities for your team, installation aids and more.

How do I charge rechargeable batteries correctly?

Avoid partial charging of DC AGM and gel batteries at all costs (e.g. only charge in the afternoon). As a rule, charge for approx. 12-14 hours after each use. If possible, charge your battery at least 24 hours before using it for the first time. The deeper you discharge a battery, the shorter the expected service life will be. A deep discharge is particularly damaging to your battery.

How long is the service life of the UPS and battery system?

A distinction is usually made between 5, 10 and 12 year batteries. However, these are expected service lives under optimum conditions.

Experience shows that often only 70-80% of this service life expectancy is achieved.

With UPS systems, regular maintenance is crucial for the service life of the system. With regular maintenance and the regular replacement of the necessary wearing parts, UPS systems can achieve a service life of >15 years.

How long is the bridging time of the UPS system?

The bridging time is directly dependent on the connected load and the installed battery system. The battery system for the UPS systems can vary from 1 kVA, so this cannot be answered in general terms.

How long does it take to fully charge an electric car with a EV charger?

The charging time depends on the capacity of the -battery, the charging capacity and the charging power of the wallbox. As a rule, a charging capacity of up to 22 kW can be expected, which enables a full charge in just a few hours.

How durable are the heat pumps?

The heat pumps in our range are made from robust materials such as stainless steel and are low-maintenance, which ensures a long service life.

How can air conditioning systems be integrated into existing photovoltaic systems?

Our air conditioning systems can be connected to a home energy management system (HEMS) so that surplus solar power can be used specifically for cooling. Direct integration with battery storage systems is also possible.

How should a commercial storage unit be maintained?

Commercial energy storage systems require periodic maintenance to keep up their operational performance. The frequency of maintenance can vary based on the manufacturer and the technology used.

How secure is commercial storage?

Commercial storage units from renowned manufacturers have multi-level safety systems, temperature control and tested fire protection measures. Systems such as those from Pramac offer integrated cooling & heating for optimum operational safety.

How do I test a battery?

Batteries age from the time of production. Particularly deep discharging and the number of charging and final charging processes have an enormous impact on the service life. For these reasons, it is only natural that batteries lose capacity over time. This is reflected in reduced ranges or operating times. To test a battery, it is first fully charged and then the current drawn is measured. This test is very time-consuming. A quick test is not possible to determine the capacity. The necessary test devices can be ordered from AKKU SYS can be purchased. Of course, we can also carry out this test for you. Please contact us in advance by telephone.
